Oval House Theatre Downstairs
1st-18th October 2003, Wednesday-Saturday 7.45pm
PRESS NIGHT Thursday 2nd October
A new play by acclaimed novelist and playwright Courttia Newland,
directed by Riggs O'Hara and performed by The Post Office Theatre
Company, B IS FOR BLACK follows the meteoric rise, then fall from
grace of one Ben Nelson. A Black man who formerly attended Oxford,
Ben begins his first day at West Chamberlayne Arts (WCA) determined
to show his new colleague, Imani, that he isn't just another Uncle
Tom. However, when Ben's English wife and father-in-law appear at
the WCA office, Imani begins to doubt the validity of his claims.
Slighted by what she believes Ben represents, Imani decides to test
his integrity to the very limits…
Courttia Newland was born in Hammersmith. His acclaimed first novel
THE SCHOLAR arrived on the literary scene in 1997, while his second,
SOCIETY WITHIN was published in 1999; his third, SNAKESKIN, in 2002.
B IS FOR BLACK is Courttia Newland's latest play. Past successes
include THE FAR SIDE at The Tricycle Theatre (2001) and Mothers'
Day at the Lyric Theatre (2002).
Mothers' Day '
The thing that impressed me most was the audience - young, attentive,
multicultural…' Michael Billington, The Guardian.
