What’s it all about?
Any festival borne out of a knee-jerk, out of spontaneity, out of the sheer forthright belief that “hot-damn I could do this and do it well” – is straight out good with us. Taking its point of departure from one night at Green Man Festival back in 2005, when the founders of End of the Road realised they could put on a festival their way and make it work, this is an event swiftly becoming one of the absolute homemade highlights in the festival calendar.
With no definitive style or edge to what bands make up the lineup (the organisers shamelessly state that they put on only bands they like), End of the Road promises that, for a change, every band on the lineup is a headliner to them. Aiming for an inclusive atmosphere with decent food, a good range of beers and some semblance of sanitary living for the duration of the event – End of the Road is perfect for anyone who’s sampled the delights of Green Man and wants more, or for the festive-searcher in need of something wholesome, fun and darn laid back…
This year you can catch performances (which are billed as being slightly longer than most other festivals, by the way) by the likes of Billy Childish, Mercury Rev, Low, British Sea Power, Dirty Three and plenty, plenty more. Also, EotR has somehow got this reputation for the musicians get far closer to those raggedy punters than any other festival on the scene. In recent years, musicians have been leading workshops, getting wasted in the bars and generally being involved with everyone who’d paid money to actually come and see them. Not just that, but impromptu collaborations have also become a thing at EotR, with Ryan Adams and Jolie Holland’s really successful spontaneous team-up back in ‘06.
You want an alternative to everything big and ridiculous that defines the mainstream British festival circuit, here it is. Oh and did we mention the Scandinavian thread running through the event – maybe it does have it all?...
