The figures from industry body Rajar cover April-June 2007.

Radio 2 has 13.1 million listeners, a slight drop on the previous quarter.

Wogan remains the nation’s favourite breakfast host, adding 40,000 listeners in the past quarter - although at 7.92 million he is not too far ahead of Moyles.

Jenny Abramsky, the BBC’s director of audio and music, said: "These figures show a remarkable quarter for Radio 1.

"The network’s distinctive music programming, combined with an innovative use of digital technology, have ensured it remains as relevant as ever to young listeners."

The figures include listening for Radio 1’s Big Weekend event, which took place in May and included performances from the likes of Kasabian, Scissor Sisters and Razorlight.

Heart’s Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott are London’s top commercial breakfast show hosts with 874,000 listeners.

They snatched the crown from Capital FM’s Johnny Vaughan, whose audience dropped to 836,000.

And the Moyles effect does not seem to have a grip on London - his listening figures in the capital fell from 970,000 to 939,000 over the quarter.


DJ Moyles has Royal listener - June 26 2007
Prince Harry has given motormouth DJ Chris Moyles the royal seal of approval.

Harry revealed himself to be a fan of the Radio 1 breakfast show host in an interview with Fearne Cotton.

The 22-year-old and his brother Prince William spoke to the presenter ahead of this weekend’s Concert for Diana.

"I listen to more of the radio than anything else - then you don’t have to go and buy the records," Harry said in a discussion about his music tastes.

"It’s much easier to listen to the tunes on the radio and Chris Moyles, I like him a lot."

William and Harry have organised this Sunday’s concert at Wembley Stadium to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her death.

It features performances by Diana’s favourite acts, including Sir Elton John and Duran Duran, plus artists chosen by the princes, among them Joss Stone and Kanye West.

"It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate her life," Harry said.

The interview will be broadcast on BBC One on Friday.


Moyles: I hate all of them - May 30 2007
Chris Moyles has apparently slammed all this year’s Big Brother contestants - saying, "I hate everyone that goes in".

The Radio 1 DJ, who will be the first guest presenter on Big Brother’s Big Mouth, revealed that he thought it was the "irritating" housemates that made the Channel 4 show a must-see programme.

He told The Sun: "Every year I watch Big Brother and I hate everybody that goes in. I’m irritated by them from the start, they’re all wannabes.

"I love Big Brother - but as soon as they’re evicted I don’t care about them anymore, it’s finished."

The 33-year-old, who is replacing Russell Brand on the spin-off show, said: "I’m really looking forward to Big Mouth. I’ll look very similar to Russell so viewers will hardly notice the change."

He will host three shows starting from tonight at 11.05pm.
