Bianca Gascoigne has said it is "a sad situation" that her stepfather Paul is being detained under the Mental Health Act.

The glamour model said that, while she had not seen her the former England footballer "for some time", her thoughts were with him.

And she appealed for him to be allowed his privacy as he recovers.

Paul was sectioned after he was said to be acting as a "potential menace" at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead on Wednesday night.

It followed an incident at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle hours earlier, where the hotel said the star made other guests and staff feel "threatened".

Police said there were no injuries.

Bianca, who won Love Island in 2006, said: "Obviously there has been a lot of speculation in the news lately about my dad.

"I haven't spoken to him for some time so I am unsure what the full story is at this point.

"It is a sad situation that has had an impact on my family and he needs respect and privacy at this time to get back to good health."

She added: "My thoughts are with him and I wish him all the best in his recovery."

Bianca Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following a crash which left her needing hospital attention.

The 20-year-old reality TV star and stepdaughter of troubled ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne is believed to have been twice the legal limit when police found her at the scene of the collision in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, on Monday night.

She was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked over before being bailed to return to a police station on October 30.

Bianca, the winner of ITV’s reality dating show Love Island, had earlier been celebrating her mother Sheryl’s birthday before deciding to drive to her boyfriend’s home, it is believed.

Just after 7.30pm officers were called to a crash involving a blue Mercedes and a Honda Civic.

Police confirmed that a 20-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Watford General Hospital to be checked over, where she was also tested for alcohol.

The woman was released from hospital and bailed.

No-one else was injured in the incident.
