Bjork’s Tibet outburst - Feb 4 2008
Bjork has upset fans with an outburst during a concert in China.

The Icelandic singer faced criticism from some Chinese fans when she declared: "Tibet! Tibet!" to end a passionate performance of her song, Declare Independence, during the gig.

The outburst, at the finale of Bjork’s concert in Shanghai, made audience members uneasy, by drawing rare public attention to China’s often harsh rule over Tibet.

Audience member Stephen Gow, a British teacher who lives in Shanghai, said the atmosphere turned strange and concertgoers hurriedly left the Shanghai International Gymnastic Centre.

Although the incident was not reported in the state-controlled media, online sites buzzed with angry comment after word leaked out.

"If she really did this, then this woman really makes people throw up," one comment on popular Chinese website Sina.com said.

Bjork has used Declare Independence -- which includes the line "raise your flag!" -- to declare political support for various causes.

Angel Bjork - Oct 04
Bjork passed up part as Charlie’s Angel to concentrate on singing career. The winner of a Best Actress Award at Cannes in 2000 says that she was offered a part in the Hollywood blockbuster even before Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu were approached. The singer said that she would like to do another album before turning her attentions to another film "I think you should find your lot and try to do it really well." She commented "If I start having an affair with film I won’t be loyal to anything and it will all become wishy washy."

Olymic Bjork - August 04
Bjork has kicked off the Olympics in style. The Icelandic songstress sang Oceania, a song she composed especially for the event, at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Bjork told reporters that she felt incredibly honoured to be asked to perform at the ceremony which saw around 14,000 people packing out the stadium. The track is taken from the forthcoming album Medulla, released on 30th August.

Bjork collaborates - August 04

Bjork’s latest album will feature a plethora of collaborations.

The quirky singer’s new work will be released on Aug 31st. Produced by Bjork herself with assistance with long time pal Mark Bell the album features help from Mike Patton, Roots, Inuit throat singer Tagaq and choirs from both London and Iceland. We have no doubt that this latest offering will be as mad as we’ve come to expect from the former Sugar Cube.

Bogus Bjork gig - 14/04/03
A man has been accused of selling tickets to a fake Bjork concert in the U.S - and netted himself $14,000.

He apparently duped the manager of a San Diego nightclub into believing Bjork had agreed to perform and sold tickets at $40 each. A spokesman for Bjork said there were never plans for her to perform in San Diego.

Bjork lets her fans choose the music - 03/12/02
Hampstead resident Bjork has let her fans decide what songs will appear on her Greatest Hits album.

She asked her fans to vote, via the Internet, on their favourite songs and these will appear in the order of the fans ranking - so the biggest vote getter will be number one on the CD.

"I was very pleased, when I saw the fans’ voting, how similar it was to mine," Bjork said. "I think somebody at my job can’t ask for much more than that, that your fans see your work in a similar light as you do yourself.’

The biggest vote getter has been ’All Is Full of Love’.

Biography

Björk Gudmundsdottir was born November 21, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Her stepfather was also a member of a rock band in Iceland. Before becoming a solo act, Björk was the vocalist of several bands throughout her career, whilst 1986 marked the end for the band she was in called Kukl, it marked a new beginning for Björk and her husband, guitarist Thor Eldon, who in 1986 saw the birth of their son Sindri. In the same year they formed the band The Sugarcubes.

The Sugarcubes were a success but broke up in 1992, on her own after having split up with her husband, Björk moved to London with her son in 1993, ready to begin her solo career. Björk’s appropriately titled solo album, Debut, was a huge commercial hit, and also marked a departure from her post-punk rock scene.

Björk took home the Best Actress award at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival, for her role in the musical Dancer in the Dark. Playing a factory worker in the film, she also wrote and performed the film’s score.

Björk has prior acting experience; in 1986, she performed in an independent American film that was filmed in Iceland, based on the folk tale "The Juniper Tree".
