Upon arrival I was met with an enormous ocean of colourful umbrellas and the first sets were watched through covering sheets of sideways rain. Thoughts about this being another music festival marred by stereotypically diabolical weather were never too far away. Luckily things got better and the first rays of sun started splitting the clouds towards the end of Rufus Wainwright’s set, (coincidentally) during his gorgeous rendition of “Hallelujah”.
Initial weather issues aside, there was absolutely no fault to find with the day’s musical line up and there was something for everybody to enjoy. The Hop Farm Festival was in general a very peaceful day out with all types of people enjoying themselves.
It was full of hippies and hipsters, old as well as young fans and plenty of people who brought their children along for the ride.
There were many highlights on offer on Sunday. Rufus Wainwright, despite doing a solo set and using nothing more than an acoustic guitar and a piano seemed comfortable on a big stage. Showing both his vocal prowess and song writing talent, Rufus gave a grand performance.
Kentucky’s My Morning Jacket came out on stage sharply dressed and probably had the most diverse sound of the day. Slow and funky, but always with an emotional edge. Their psychedelic, reverb-drenched sounded immense out in the open air. Their up-coming gig in London might have just earned a few more visitors.
It was easy to see why Supergrass’ chirpy, punky pop was so popular as well. They were energetic without being driven by testosterone and have very memorable songs suited for a sing-along. In other words, they were perfect for a festival. Primal Scream offered a set spanning their eclectic sound and history and provided a solid delivery. “Swastika eyes” in particular seemed to get people jumping with its heavy beats.
No matter how good a reception all the previous groups received, it was evident who would still the show. Neil Young, a little bit older was great on stage and delivered a fine set with plenty of good tunes taken from a long and illustrious career.
The Hop Farm Festival was a good day filled with enjoyment and some very good rock music, classic as well as new. Here’s hoping for a consistently sunny day next time."
